After the latest eruptions of the south-east crater, it is no longer possible to reach the central crater from the southern side (Rifugio Sapenza). The last eruptions destroyed the trail lead to the top, and the high level of volcanic risk due to the continuous activity of the southeast crater, inhibit whatever activites at high altitude in the south side. At the moment the only way to reach the summit of Etna is from the north side. From the north some special 4x4 vehicles rising up from Piano Provenzana station up to the Volcanological Observatory at 2.850 meters, here begin the high altitude trek that leads up to the central crater.
PROGRAM
The ascent trail from the north side offers unique landscapes and panoramic views. Geological forces and nature coexist in a unique and unrepeatable symbiosis, giving rise to woods, green oasis, volcanic canal dominated by pioneer plants, views of the sea and the bay of Taormina of great charm and beauty. The high-altitude trekking will lead you to discover immense volcanic valleys, pyroclastic deposits, lava fields immersed in the so-called lunar landscape up to the hugeness of the central crater, from whose edge we will discover the processes and the titanic forces that have shaped the highest active volcano in Europe.
ASCENSION STEPS
- Meeting Point around 7:45am at the Piano Provenzana station (Look location);
- Ascent* by 4x4 vehicles up to the Volcanological Observatory of Pizzi Dineri at 2850 meters (One way ticket included );
- Start of the high altitude trek up to the central crater at an altitude of 3340 meters (400 meters of difference in level);
- Lunch break;
- Descent down to 2850 meters
- On board 4x4 vehicles descent down to the Starting Station at 1800 meters above see level .

ATTENTION !
The excursions to the central crater of mount Etna are carried out only in safe conditions, it means during volcanic activity or bad weather conditions it is not possible guarantee the ascent to the summit area. In any case you will be notified for any cancellation or displacement with the possibility to do a different itinerary built based on the conditions of the volcano.
